2011 Kanonkop Estate Black Label Pinotage

Estate: Kanonkop Wine Estate
Region: Simonsberg-Stellenbosch, Stellenbosch, Coastal Region, South Africa

Tasting Note:December 1, 2017

Sixth of the reds in our South African blind tasting. This is the benchmark bottling's older brother. Bigger and badder. Deep purplish red. Lovely and powerful nose with dark cocoa, espresso beans, dark plums, and blackberries. Heavy tannins (7/10) and full bodied. Explosive palate with tons of dark berries and spices. Excellent structure and rounded body. Long and lingering finish, built for the long haul.

The absolute king of Pinotages is this Black Label bottling by Abrie Beeslaar and Kanonkop Wine Estate. Made up of 100% Pinotage from 58 year old bush vines, this is one of the most complex and beauty wines in the county. Aged for 17 months in 100% new French oak 225L barrels.
