2004 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select

Estate: Shafer Vineyards

Region: Stags Leap District, Napa Valley, California, United States of America

Tasting Note:April 16, 2016

Super extracted and full of complex flavors. Beautiful deep crimson red. Nose was coated in dark fruits, hint of chalkiness, and definitely some oak influence such as vanilla extract. Complex palate with a ton of dark fruits (creme de cassis and dark berries) and a slightly savory finish. Moderate plus tannins (7/10) that was pretty well integrated with a thick, extracted and full bodied. Long and lingering finish covered with dark berries, but does have some slight heat in the finish. Tastes like a 2010 or younger, definitely not a 2004. Patience will be rewarded with this wine.

This is the top bottling from Shafer Vineyards, made of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. All the grapes that go into this wine are carefully selected from each block within this estate's vineyard in the Stags Leap District including: Sunspot Block, John's Folly Block, Venado Illegal Block and the Firebreak Block. Aged for 32 months in 100% new French oak (Cooperages: Allier and Tronçais). Additionally this is aged for another 16 months in the bottle prior to release.
