2011 Mvemve Raats MR de Compostella

Estate: Raats Family Wines

Region: Stellenbosch, Coastal Region, South Africa

Tasting Note:August 5, 2017

Fourth of the blind wines. Deep ruby red. Nose started off quite tight, needs more than an hour and a half decant. Earthy nose with menthol notes, darker spices, cinnamon, a touch of dirty cellar, a little green, chalky and light dark berries. Heavy tannins (7.5/10) and medium plus bodied. Great structure with notes of red berries, oak, earth, herbaceous, minerality, and a touch vegetal. Very dry and long finish.

One of the leading red Bordeaux blends out of South Africa. This is a Bordeaux blend made up of 52% Cabernet Franc, 20% Malbec, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot. Aged for a total of 24 months in 33% new French oak. De Compostella means The Compilation of Stars and is aimed at allowing each of the five varietals to stand on their own.
