Estate: Saddleback Cellars
Region: Calistoga, Napa Valley, California, United States of America
Vineyards: Frediani and Rattlesnake Vineyards

Tasting Note:June 28, 2016

Second red wine from Saddleback Cellars. Dark ruby red. Some floral and dried herbs notes on the nose. Slightly savory undertones. Moderate plus tannins (7.5/10) and full bodied. Not overly jammy or fruity. A little gamey to start with some black cherries and plums. Some metallic notes like iron and some brown sugar too. Long and lingering.

22nd vintage of this Old Vine Zinfandel which is made of 95% Zinfandel and 5% Petite Sirah. All of the Zinfandel is sourced from 95 year old vines on the Frediani Vineyard and the Petite Sirah is sourced from the Rattlesnake Vineyard, both in Calistoga. Both vineyards sit in the middle of a valley with extreme heat during the day and cool nights. All fruit was sorted on a crush-pad prior to gentle crushing in small fermenters. Left on the skin for ten days with a combination of punch downs and pump-overs twice a day. Aged for fourteen months in 65% new American oak barrels.
